Hypocrea schweinitzii sensu stricto is not known from Africa, India, or Australasia, fide Samuels et al. 1998, p. 48; most NZ collections are referable to Hypocrea cerebriformis and Hypocrea pseudokoningii;Kuhl et al. (1997) noted extreme genetic variation amongst isolates of this species from New Zealand. Samuels et al. (1998) "this species is not known from Australasia"
