- From the Latin punctulatus (minutely dotted), a reference by Colenso to the “shining dots”, of unknown origin, that produce the glaucous or white colour on the abaxial surface of the lamina of Gleichenia dicarpa and its hybrids. These dots can coalesce to give a uniform covering., Lectotype (designated by Perrie & Brownsey 2015): Great Barrier Island, C.P. Winkelmann s.n., WELT P003355/A-B!, but excluding the piece at lower-left on sheet P003355/B.
