The epithet lepturus means "slender-tailed" and apparently refers to the leaf tips. Taylor (1846) aptly described the "leaves near the tops of the shoots" as having "elongated, almost piliferous summits.", Type: Western Australia, Swan River, 1843, J. Drummond s.n., NY-Mitten!
