- Cheeseman (1906, 1925) treated this name as a synonym of Aristotelia fruticosa Hook.f.; Allan (1961), p. 335, discussed it in notes under Aristotelia fruticosa. Heenan & de Lange (2004) have been unable to locate any Colenso specimens that are referable to M. brachyclada.
