The epithet atrovirens (dark green) alludes to the colour of the plants, described and beautifully illustrated (as Grimmia atro-virens) in the protologue. In a N.Z. context, however the colour is typically yellow-green., Lectotype: Great Britain, Davies s.n., BM (Designated by Cano & Gallego 2003, p. 615.) Not seen.
